SIDE HUSTLE! – YOU DON’T HAVE TO QUIT YOUR JOB (Chris Guillebeau)

When we started Success4, one of the trends we wanted to go against was the urge to quit your day job, take the words of the person on stage who is a motivational speaker to be gospel and then go all in. We saw this first hand even with those we worked with here at Success4, they quit their job and moved house (even in with the motivational speaker themselves) and began working with them, which didn’t pan out to well. We believe that self development is a step by step process of progress.

Now I am not one of the most patient people in the world by a long stretch, ask my partner and she will tell you I have very little ability to sit with anything for a long period of time unless I feel it’s moving forward like Success4 is today. So one of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to see the preparation stage as a progress stage itself, by this I mean seeing the saving of money as part of the process, so maybe you might need to save some money for two years prior to starting your new business on the side (Your Side Hustle). This really helped me feel like I was moving forward, that I had a destination and ultimately that I was taking control of my life, working right now towards a future tomorrow.

Setting up a business on the side is different from a hobby, its something that will eventually pay you to do it full time .It needs to be optimised and structure and you need to have products or services that will bring in a steady income in the long run. A hobby is something you like to do in your spare time, it’s something you often love to do when you WANT to do it, and if you HAD to do it to earn money you might soon grow to dislike it. Hobbies are you escapism from the responsibility of what you HAVE to do.

So setting up a Side Hustle is a really great way to ease yourself into a new business, a new career at a pace that suits you best. It can then eventually turn into your main thing, your main income stream. In the digital age we are often required to juggle many different things at once, all under the same umbrella of one business, for example we produced Video productions, Social media marketing, Podcast productions, creating and publishing the MindShift Magazine, Live Events Filming and much more. This is all under the one business. A Side Hustle to that might be to run an internet cafe or a book publishing business.

This article was inspired by the incredible book “Side Hustle” by Chris Guillebeau which teaches you how to create and build a side business that makes money, without quitting your day job straight away. This book is ideal for full time parents or anyone with a full time commitment that has an idea and want’s to create a new income stream of their own.

SIDE HUSTLE is not about quitting your job to become an entrepreneur. It’s for everyone on the outside of the entrepreneurial world looking in. The message is simple: you don’t have to quit your day job to build a fast track to freedom. You can increase your income and your job security by doing something you love.
